How to weed vinyl sticker sheets'Weeding' is removing the waste around precut shapes or letters on a vinyl sticker sheet. The sheet starts off as a plain sticker sheet with a backing paper and put through a cutter, which cuts the letters or shapes with computer control. it only cuts the shapes, the waste is removed manually. 1. get tools together, best tools are a scalpel and/or tweezers. prepare for some patience, it will take time! 2. pick a corner of the sheet and start peeling vinyl side up, slowly away from the backing paper. 3. roll the vinyl tightly back, when you get to the 1st cut shape or letter it should break away on its on and leave the shape or letter on the backing. 4. if it picks up the shape, use the scalpel to cut the shape away. 5. there is a trick here, the edges break away easier when peeling parallel along the cut edge rather than into it at 90 degrees, so try to peel it in this direction. you can also hold the shape down with the edge of the blade while peeling the waste away. 6. it may help to cut some 'weeding lines' before or as you peel on a sheet with a lot of shapes or small letters. this will prevent you getting tangled up and trying to weed around too many shapes at once. try to run in small sections. 7. once all is weeded, you can now add the application tape. there is specialist tape for this job but on thin sections you can use LOW TACK masking tape 2" wide. if you use normal tape it will make it harder to peel off from the item you are applying stickers to. On small detail you can cut around the shapes into 2" sections so that you can use the tape. 8. rub the application tape well onto the shapes. 9. clean surface to be applied to well, best using a solvent or the like. if not cleaned the sticker will peel after a short time. 10. peel the backing off by turning it over-backing side up, peel from 1 corner slowly rolling tightly. 11. apply sticker, carefully lining up and rub in with fingers or a roller well. peel application tape from the corner carefully, again rolling tightly. make sure all edges of stickers are flat on the surface. I will try to add some pictures soon to illustrate these points. |
