With the rising fuel costs people are
increasingly searching for alternative methods, some getting in trouble
for it! (such as low-duty red diesel). Some of the alternatives are also
beneficial to the environment.
Biofuel, the fuel of the future? It seems that this is the way things
are going at the moment with the drive for cleaner fuels and the limited
supply of crude oil in the world. It can be seen that Bio-fuel
manufacturers are popping up around the world and looks set to increase
as time goes on. Information is also available to produce
Bio-Diesel (see link below) and Ethanol yourself in your own
shed. There are also varieties of 'cooking oil' mixes that can be used
instead of Diesel, and can be used legally in your car if you pay duty
on it (still cheaper than pump fuel). This is not recommended for long
term use without some simple modifications, such as fuel heater,
stronger glo-plugs etc. Most Biofuels enjoy a tax break of 20p litre in
the UK.
Though this looks like the way its going (as are generally available
now), there are numbers of other fuels (or power for cars) being
researched now, some secret that we have not heard of yet
and more yet that were apparently suppressed by oil barrens that will
eventually start to come out. Some you would not even think possible!,
although most of these will need years of research before the best may
become viable, many require exotic or rare materials to utilise, making
them non-commercially viable. other technologies are emerging such as Fuel Cells, Hydrogen
Generation and Hydrogen fuel balls to name a few.
Experimenters all over the world are coming up with early versions of
alternatives that can be utilsed now if you are willing to build the
system yourself, such as water-powered systems. This relies on
breaking the water down to its constituent parts Hydrogen H (2 parts) and Oxygen
O (from H2O), then using the Hydrogen in a lightly modified petrol
engine. It should be noted that running on a 100% water system, corrosion
within the engine and exhaust system will ensue without modifying them.
An alternative to this is run 3% Petrol mix with the Hydrogen.
Another much simpler and cheaper conversion system is run a Hydrogen
booster system to your normal engine providing much improved economy on
your standard fuel. See links below.
The other mainstream fuel technology is fuel cells as used in Hybrid
cars. This utilises hydrogen and air to convert into electricity and
power the vehicle with the electricity. Some car manufacturers are
producing hybrid cars with high performance batteries (Lithium Ion)
instead of fuel cells, which provide enough overnight charge to get to
work for the average person (approx. 40 miles), then goes on to standard
fuel once flat. More after the links....
